From Genes to Shape: analysis of morphogenesis in Drosophila and vertebrates

that incorporate results produced in this Bioinformatics platform.

ABSTRACT
The Consolider Project "From genes to shape" groups the major part of the Spanish
specialists in Developmental Biology. There are three principal objectives in the project.
The first is the experimental analysis of a number of major problems in the field:
Identification and study of genes involved in the processes of pattern formation and cell
differentiation, the study of the various cell properties and interactions that emerge
during development, and the analysis of the mechanisms controlling size and shape of
organs and organisms. A second objective is to establish a functional connection
between research groups that utilize different animal models. In Spain there is a strong
tradition in Drosophila development, but recent years have seen the appearance of new
groups using mice, frogs or zebra fish as model systems. The possibility of establishing
collaborations and/or interactions between groups working with different animal models,
but with a similar approach, will undoubtedly be important, since it will allow a validation
of the significance of the results obtained with the different models Finally, a third
objective is the establishment of several technlogical platforms: A genetic platform
including a collection of Drosophila stocks together with a facility to generate transgenic
lines localized in Madrid, a gene silencing platform using RNAi technology localized in
Bilbao, a microarray and bioinformatics platform in Barcelona and a vertebrate
development platform in Sevilla.

BIOINFORMATICS PLATFORM:

This platform of services is conceived to provide bioinformatics assistance to the
members of the Consolider project entitled From Genes to Shapes in the context
of their major research programs, specially focusing on high-throughput approaches.
Multiple activities will be offered according to the needs of the researchers,
including consulting, training, research and collaborative tasks on several areas
of Genomics Bioinformatics. Communication between the Bioinformatics Platform
and the Consolider researchers is organized through a secure web content management
system on the internet to facilitate the access to data, results and applications.
